Chapter 5 Religion Is Yang To The Yin Of Science

As mankind evolved in awareness of nature, it was 'natural' that people evolved in their understanding of the patterns of nature. As '4' (Yin) dimensional cultures evolved in their understanding of the nature of the world, they developed a subdivided (Yin) understanding of the world. These subdivisions are known as 'religion' and 'science'.

There is currently a great rivalry going on among the Indo-European languages between religion and science. Which one is 'right'? Is the religious 'belief' in creation 'right', or is the scientific 'knowledge' of evolution 'right'? We have seen that science is correct, and that the theory of the evolution of mankind is true. We have also seen that, misguided by the youthful structure of four dimensional languages, science is incorrect in many of its assumptions about the nature of the world. We will now discover that religion is also correct, and that the theory of creation of true, but also that, misguided by the youthful structure of four dimensional languages, religion is incorrect in many of its assumptions about the nature of the world.

In the ancient culture of the Greeks, Romans, and English speakers, due to incomplete integration of the five dimensions, awareness of the distinction of time and space, of Yang and Yin, took the form of male and female gods. In the fourth dimension of awareness, and early into the fifth dimension, the religions of the Indo-European cultures, which spoke languages with a primary orientation to four dimensions, considered the keepers of time in the heavens to be gods. The sun symbolized the sun god, the male giver of the day (and later the year), the moon symbolized the moon goddess, the female giver of the month, and each aspect of nature came to be symbolized by a distinct god. As people became aware of the fifth dimension, they became aware of the integration of all of the dimensions, such as the units of time of the sun and the moon. This naturally resulted in a tendency to abandon pantheons of distinct gods for a single integrated god. This does not mean that everyone will, or should, abandon multiple gods for a single god, but only that there has been this tendency.

Each language causes it speakers to relate to the world in a different way. Each culture causes it adherents to relate to the world in a different way. Each individual has personal differences in understanding how the world is organized. It is clear that there is no '1' absolute and 'correct' way to relate to the world. It is therefore 'natural' that religions be diverse.

Only in the last few thousand years, with the awareness of the fifth dimension, have speakers of languages that orient to four dimensions evolved from '1' (Yang) to '2' (Yin) methods of understanding nature. The two methods are called 'religion' and 'science'. Religion and science are '2' different methods by which to understand the '1' nature of the world.

What is religion? What is science? What are these '2' ways to understand the '1' nature of the world? Religion is the Yang to the Yin of science. Religion is Yang. Science is Yin. Religion is abstract (Yang), and cannot be accessed directly through (four dimensional) language, and so is formless (Yang). Science is concrete (Yin), and can be accessed directly through language, and so has form (Yin). Religion symbolizes an awareness of '5' (Yang) dimensions. Science symbolizes an awareness of '4' (Yin) dimensions. Religion recognizes an integration (Yang) of nature into '1' (Yang) god. Science symbolizes a subdivision (Yin) of nature into '4' (Yin) forces. Once mankind became aware of the five dimensional cycle of the year, religion quickly (Yang) became the '1'st (Yang) to evolve to a five dimensional integrated understanding of the pattern of nature, whereas science slowly (Yin) becomes the '2'nd (Yin) to evolve to an integrated understanding of the pattern of nature.

In ancient times, within the end of the last ice age, approximately ten thousand years ago, mankind became aware of the five dimensional cycle of the year. At that time, the grammars of languages that orient to four dimensions, such as the ancestor of English, caused people to understand the patterns of nature in the form of gods that follow the same pattern (shape, gender, etc.) as mankind. As religion is Yang, religion quickly (Yang) evolved from a '4' (Yin) dimensional pantheon of gods into a '5' (Yang) dimensional integrated (Yang) god.

The four dimensional patterns of nature were well, if not ideally, symbolized in the form of gods. The ancient 'mythologies' were not 'wrong'. Modern 'religion' is more evolved than four dimensional religion; it did not abandon the earlier gods but integrated them into a single god. (Modern science, however, still 'knows' that the gods are subdivided.) The sun and the moon were the givers of time, light, and heat, without which there could be no life of mankind. With awareness of the fifth dimension, each of the planets was recognized as a god as well. Once four dimensional cultures became aware of the five dimensional cycle of the year, they intuitively became aware that all of the '4' different patterns of nature follow the same '1' pattern. There was recognized to be '1' pattern of nature, and '5' different dimensions of expression of that pattern. All of mankind is aware of this integration of the forces of nature, perceptively, as people recognize the clear symbolism of the cycle of the year.

However, even though speakers of languages that orient to four dimensions 'believe' their five dimensional understanding to be true, they cannot express this new truth in words, because their words are in a language that still orients to four dimensions. Therefore, religion has to be accepted as being true on the basis of what science calls 'belief', or 'faith'. Mankind believes that it is true, but cannot say why because his four dimensional words do not enable expression of his five dimensional understanding.

Science is the Yin to the Yang of religion. Only once mankind had become aware that there is an integrated five dimensional pattern of nature could he begin to develop 'science' (as distinct from religion) to attempt to understand that pattern. What is science? Science is an understanding of the world that is based on the model presented by the grammar of a language. Four dimensional science is a powerful model that enables deep insights into the organization (Yin) of nature, and it has been used to achieve technological wonders. Science is an analysis of nature that is based on the model of our language grammar. Therefore, as powerful as our model for science has proven itself to be, it is still a four dimensional model. English speakers still recognize '4' directions, '4' forces, '4' states of matter, etc. English speakers no longer have a pantheon of subdivided gods, as religion has evolved to a unified god, but English speakers still have a pantheon of subdivided forces, and a subdivided organization of nature.

What does it mean that the English grammar orients to four dimensions? Chinese has the least integrated pattern of grammar, and each dimension is understood as being distinct from each of the others. The ancestors of the speakers of English left Africa at a time when mankind was aware of '4' dimensions. Their language recognized '4' directions, '4' seasons, etc. Only later did these people become aware of the fifth dimension. By that time, the grammars of their languages were well established, and there was no way to fully integrate the fifth dimension with the other four. Indo-European and Semitic languages have evolved greatly in the last two thousand years, but they have not evolved to an awareness of '5' seasons, etc., let alone to the awareness that all '5' follow '1' pattern, and not '4' patterns.

The grammar of English does not organize its words, sentences, etc. in a five dimensional manner. It is not possible to express the '4' (Yin) dimensional concepts of science (Yin) in a '5' (Yang) dimensional manner using the '4' (Yin) dimensional grammar of English.

Science uses the grammar of language as its model for understanding nature. The entire grammar of English is oriented to '4' dimensions, with no way to understand well or express a five dimensional awareness. As religion has evolved to a five dimensional orientation and science has not, science cannot understand religion, and science cannot explain religion. Science tries to look at religion 'logically', but fails to recognize that 'logic' is based on the same model as science, the grammar of language.

The more that science evolves, the more that science challenges religion. With all of its scientific achievements, science still cannot understand religion, and so science thinks that religion 'cannot' be true. Religion seems irrational (Yang) to rational (Yin) science.

Religion cannot create its own science using English, because the grammar of English does not allow a clear understanding or expression of its five dimensional awareness. Only if a language with a five dimensional grammar were used could the nature of science be identical with that of modern religion, as both would follow the same model. Only a five dimensional grammar can fully integrate religion (Yang) and science (Yin).

No matter how possible it is to be aware theoretically of the five dimensional nature of religion, as long as people habituate to a language that organizes nouns, verbs, etc. in a four dimensional manner, it will not be possible to recognize as 'natural' all of the five dimensions of nature or to recognize that they 'naturally' follow the same '1' pattern.

Mankind is a social animal, and as he cannot express in words his perceptive understanding of nature, he naturally seeks out people to help him to understand this perceptive truth of religion that he cannot describe or understand using the words of his four dimensional language.

Religion is Yang, and Yang is formless. It is hard to understand well that which has no form. The leaders of organized religion also cannot understand well what they cannot verbalize. They endeavor to do what is very difficult to do well. There is a large amount of ritual associated with organized religion, because the less well that something is understood, the less freedom there is to challenge it, because it must either be accepted or rejected in its entirety. There is therefore little leeway for debate or change.

5.1 Greek Mythology

Greek mythology developed a large pantheon of gods, each of which had its own primary range of influence. This pantheon was not static, but evolved as the Greeks evolved over time. Only the primary gods of the pantheon will be discussed here.

In Greek 'mythology', the first dimension of awareness was symbolized by 'chaos', where there existed only '1' (Yang) homogeneous existence without subdivision or distinction (time without distinct space).

The pantheon symbolized the second dimension of awareness by taking '2' (Yin) forms, the god of the Heavens and the god of the Earth, as symbolized by the '2' index fingers.

The Greek language orients to four dimensions. The third dimension became integrated with the second dimension. Therefore, although the Greeks recognized the '3' distinctions of the segment when they became aware of the '3'rd dimension, they (later) symbolized the third dimension by attributing male and female gender to the two dimensional gods of nature. The god of the Heavens became a 'man' god, and the god of the Earth became a 'woman' goddess. These as well became identified with the '2' index fingers, where the right index finger symbolized the male Heavens and the left index finger symbolized the female Earth.

The pantheon symbolized the fourth dimension of awareness by taking '3' forms, as symbolized by the 'segment' (one finger). As each finger has '3' bones, Heaven and Earth had children in groups of '3', such as the '3' 'Hundred-Armed' children and the '3' Cyclops.

The Titans

The pantheon symbolized the fifth dimension of awareness by taking '12' forms, as symbolized by the 'area' of '4' fingers, each of which has '3' bones. In recognition of the '12' distinctions of the area, Heaven and Earth gave birth to a pantheon of '12' 'Titans'.

When the Greeks became aware of the fifth dimension, they subdivided the '3' gods of the fourth dimension into '6' gods. Because they had also become aware of gender in the fourth dimension (from the model of the sun and the moon), they further subdivided each of the '6' gods into '2' gods, a male/female pair of gods. The '12' Titans symbolize the '12' months of the '5' dimensional year. Figure 5.1-1 summarizes the symbolism of the Titans.

Figure 5.1-1

The index finger is the top (Yang) finger of the top (Yang) pair of fingers, and therefore symbolizes the 'most Yang' of the gods. The ring finger is Yang, as it is the top (Yang) finger of its pair, but it is of the bottom (Yin) pair of fingers, and therefore symbolizes 'Yang within Yin'. The little finger is the bottom (Yin) finger of the bottom (Yin) pair of fingers, and therefore symbolizes 'most Yin'. The middle finger Yin, as it is the bottom (Yin) finger of its pair, but it is of the top (Yang) pair of fingers, and therefore symbolizes 'Yin within Yang'.

The six man gods are Yang, as man is Yang, and therefore are symbolized by the Yang fingers. The six woman gods are Yin, as woman is Yin, and therefore are symbolized by the Yin fingers.

The heavens (Yang) were subdivided into the sun and the moon. The gods of the sun and the moon are symbolized by the distal bones, as the distal bones are the most distant (Yang) from the body. The sun is Yang to the Yin of the moon. Therefore, the sun god symbolizes Yang within Yang (male (Yang) god of the sun (Yang)), the moon goddess symbolizes Yin within Yin (female (Yin) goddess of the moon (Yin)), the moon god symbolizes Yang within Yin (male (Yang) god of the moon (Yin)), and the sun goddess symbolizes Yin within Yang (female (Yin) goddess of the sun (Yang)). The counting of the days alternated between odd (Yang) numbered days and even (Yin) numbered days, as symbolized by the male (Yang) and the female (Yin) sun gods. As well, the counting of the months alternated between odd (Yang) numbered months and even (Yin) numbered months, as symbolized by the male (Yang) and the female (Yin) moon gods.

The earth (Yin) was subdivided into the ocean and the land. The ocean is more powerful (Yang) to mankind (less under mankind's control) than the less powerful (Yin) land. The surface of the ocean has '1' (Yang) shape, and does not change (Yang) over the course of the year, whereas the surface of the land is subdivided (Yin) into many shapes, and each shape changes (Yin) throughout the year. The gods of the ocean and the land are symbolized by the proximal bones, as the proximal bones are the nearest (Yin) to the body. The ocean is Yang to the Yin of the land. Therefore, the ocean god symbolizes Yang within Yang, the land goddess symbolizes Yin within Yin, the land god symbolizes Yang within Yin, and the ocean goddess symbolizes Yin within Yang.

Mankind was subdivided into labor and wisdom. All (Yang) of mankind labors their whole life, without end (Yang). Not all (Yin) mankind is equally wise, and wisdom is not constant (Yin) throughout life. The gods of labor and wisdom are symbolized by the middle bones, as mankind is located between the Heavens and the Earth. Labor is Yang to the Yin of wisdom. Therefore, the labor god symbolizes Yang within Yang, the wisdom goddess symbolizes Yin within Yin, the wisdom god symbolizes Yang within Yin, and the labor goddess symbolizes Yin within Yang.

It is not definite which of the four fingers began the counting of the months, because each Greek city-state established its own calendar. The order in which the months were counted is also not clear.

The Olympians

As the Greeks became more aware of the fifth dimension, the pantheon of the Titans evolved. The Greeks did not yet have a model by which to create an integrated religion, and so there remained '12' gods. However, the Titans 'went to war', and when the war was over the Titans had been replaced by a new pantheon of '12' gods, the Olympians. Not all ancient Greek sources agree on the names of the '12' Olympian gods, or on their parents or other characteristics. The '12' that are used herein are not the only acceptable list.

Because of their awareness of the '5' dimensional cycle of the year, the Greeks had become aware of the '5' planets in the sky. These were recognized to be gods as well as the sun and the moon. This enabled the '6' distinctions of gods to subdivide again, evolving to '12' distinct attributes of gods.

How are the '12' months of the year (bones of the fingers) symbolized by the '12' Olympian gods? As with the Titans, '4' of the gods were associated with 'heaven', the distal bones; '4' of the gods were associated with 'earth', the proximal bones; and '4' of the gods were associated with 'mankind', the middle bones.

The first '4' gods were the gods of the 'heavens'. The heavens (Yang) symbolize time (Yang), and so these '4' gods symbolize the recognized units of time. The gods of the heavens (Yang) begin with the most Yang. The '1'st (Yang) unit of time of which mankind became aware was the day. The day (Yang) is symbolized by the '1'st (Yang) finger, the topmost (most Yang) finger, the index finger. The day (Yang) is symbolized by Apollo, the male (Yang) god of the sun (Yang).

The '2'nd (Yin) unit of time of which mankind became aware was the month. The month (Yin) is symbolized by the last (Yin) finger, the bottommost (most Yin) finger, the little finger. The month (Yin) is symbolized by Artemis, the female (Yin) goddess of the month (Yin). Artemis and Apollo were twin sister and brother.

The '3'rd (Yang) unit of time of which mankind became aware was the year. The year (Yang) is symbolized by the ring (Yang) finger. The year (Yang) is symbolized by Zeus, the male (Yang) god that symbolizes the planet Jupiter, as the motion of Jupiter around the heavens enabled mankind to become aware of the cycle of the year. Just as the year is the largest unit of time, the planet Jupiter came to symbolize the 'head' of the gods in all ancient pantheons. For example, under the name Marduk the planet symbolized the head of the Babylonian gods, under the name Zeus the planet symbolized the head of the Greek gods, and under the name Jupiter the planet symbolized the head of the Roman gods. The name 'Jupiter' was the Latin name of the planet, and evolved as a compound of the Latin words 'dyeu' ('god', related to the Greek word 'zeus') and 'pater' ('father'), or 'father god'.

The '4'th (Yin) unit of time of which mankind became aware was the hour. The hour (Yin) is symbolized by the middle (Yin) finger. The English word 'hour' evolved from the Latin word 'hora' (Latin for 'hour'), which itself evolved from the Greek word 'hera'. The hour (Yin) is symbolized by Hera, the wife (Yin) of Zeus, as the hour is the Yin to the Yang of the year.

The next '4' gods were the gods of the 'earth'. The earth (Yin) symbolizes space (Yin). The gods of the earth (Yin) begin with the most Yin. The goddess (Yin) of the earth that corresponds to the moon (Yin), which is symbolized by the little finger, is the goddess Aphrodite (the planet Venus), the goddess of love and childbirth. Love populates the world with childbirth, and the cycle of pregnancy follows the cycle of the moon. Woman (Yin) can become pregnant inconstantly (Yin), once a month (Yin).

The god (Yang) of the earth that corresponds to the day (Yang), which is symbolized by the index finger, is the god Ares (the planet Mars), the god of hate and death (usually by war). Hate depopulates the Earth with death, and the cycle of death follows the cycle of the day. Man (Yang) can kill every day (Yang).

The goddess (Yin) of the earth that corresponds to the hour, which is symbolized by the middle finger, is the goddess Demeter, the goddess of the land (Yin), which mankind can control (Yin) to produce food (Yin). The land (Yin) occupies most (Yin) of the earth of which the ancient Greeks were aware. Land (Yin) changes (Yin) throughout the '4' (Yin) seasons. Demeter and Hera were sisters.

The god (Yang) of the earth that corresponds to the year (Yang), which is symbolized by the ring finger, is the god Poseidon (god of the ocean). The ocean (Yang) occupies less (Yang) of the earth of which the ancient Greeks were aware. The oceans (Yang) do not change (Yang) throughout the whole (Yang) year. Poseidon and Zeus were brothers of the sisters Demeter and Hera.

The ocean was more important to the ancient Greeks than to the ancient Chinese. Because the Greeks sailed the Mediterranean Sea, a greater part of their world was water. Just as English is Yin to the Yang of Chinese, water occupied more space (Yin) for the ancient Greeks than for the ancient Chinese.

The last '4' gods were the gods of 'mankind'. Mankind is Yin to the Yang of the heavens, and mankind is Yang to the Yin of the earth. The gods of mankind begin with Yang, as mankind symbolizes Yang within the Yin that is the earth. The '4' gods of mankind also symbolize the '4' personalities of mankind.

The god (Yang) of mankind that corresponds to the day is the god Hermes (the planet Mercury). Mercury is the fastest (most Yang) planet, and Mercury is constantly in motion traveling around the heavens. Hermes is the god of mankind in motion (Yang) outside (Yang) of the house, and so Hermes was the god of traveling, as man (Yang) moves (Yang) everywhere (Yang). Hermes was the god of everything that man (Yang) does outside (Yang), including such as business and athletics.

The goddess (Yin) of mankind that corresponds to the month (Yin) is the goddess Hestia, the keeper of the hearth and the home. Woman (Yin) stays at home (Yin), inside (Yin). It was important to ensure that the hearth fire never went out, as it was hard to reignite.

Hermes and Hestia were '1'st (Yang). They symbolize '2' personalities. Hermes was 'extroverted' (Yang), and he traveled outdoors (Yang), far (Yang), to interact frequently (Yang) with many (Yang) other gods. Hestia was 'introverted' (Yin), and she stayed indoors (Yin), nearby (Yin), to interact rarely (Yin) with few (Yin) other gods. Because Hestia kept to herself and interacted rarely with the other gods, there are few myths about her.

The last pair of gods are the most Yin of the Yang gods and the most Yang of the Yin goddesses. The god (Yang) of mankind that corresponds to the year (Yang) is the god Hephaestus. Hephaestus is the last (Yin), the most Yin, of the male (Yang) gods. Hephaestus was born with no father (Yin), of the goddess Hera. Hephaestus was ugly (Yin). He was socially unskilled (Yin). These qualities caused him to be thrown off of Mount Olympus, such that he fell down (Yin) to the earth (Yin), '2' (Yin) times. Hephaestus oriented to his body (Yin), such that his mind was slow (Yin). Hephaestus was socially less skillful, as he related more to the now (Yin), and was less concerned with changes in relationships with people over time (Yin). Hephaestus was the god of the labor (Yin) of man (Yang), such as metalwork. Labor (Yin) creates things with form (Yin). Hephaestus created large (Yin) works in space.

The goddess (Yin) of mankind that corresponds to the hour (Yin) is the goddess Athena. Athena is the last (last Yin is Yang), the most Yang, of the female (Yin) goddesses. Athena was born with no mother (Yang), of the god Zeus. Athena was beautiful (Yang). She was socially skilled (Yang). She lived in heaven (Yang). Athena oriented to her head (Yang), such that her mind was quick (Yang). Athena was the goddess of wisdom (Yang) and cunning (Yang). Social skill and cunning require the development of relationships with people over time (Yang). Wisdom is formless (Yang). It was the cunning of Athena that gave Odysseus the idea for the Trojan Horse. Athena was also the goddess of the labor (Yin) of woman (Yin), such as weaving. She created small (Yang) works in space.

The '1'st (Yang) '2' personalities, symbolized by Hermes and Hestia, subdivided into a '2'nd (Yin) pair of personalities, as symbolized by Hephaestus and Athena. Hephaestus symbolized Yin within Yang. Hephaestus symbolized man (Yang), and yet man who could manipulate space (Yin). Hephaestus (Yin) oriented to his physical (Yin) body (Yin), where he related to sensations (Yin) now (Yin). Athena symbolized Yang within Yin. Athena symbolized woman (Yin), and yet woman who could manipulate ideas and people over time (Yang). Athena (Yang) oriented to her mental (Yang) head (Yang), where she related to intuitions (Yang) that were developed over time (Yang). Athena (Yang) was born '1'st (Yang), of man (Yang), with a body that was healthy (Yang) and straight (Yang). Hephaestus (Yin) was born '2'nd (Yin), of woman (Yin), with a body that was crooked (Yin) (his leg was lame).

Notice that '3' (Yang) of the distal (Yang) bones symbolize planets (Apollo, Artemis, Zeus), '2' (Yin) of the proximal (Yin) bones symbolize planets (Aphrodite, Ares), and '1' (Yang) of the middle (Yang within Yin) bones symbolize a planet (Hermes). Notice as well that all '3' (Yang) of the bones of the index (most Yang) finger symbolize planets (Apollo, Ares, Hermes), '2' (Yin) of the bones of the little (most Yin) finger symbolize planets (Aphrodite, Artemis), '1' (Yang) of the bones of the ring (Yang) finger symbolize a planet (Zeus), and '0' (Yin) bones of the middle (Yin) finger symbolize a planet.

How is the cycle of the year counted? When does the cycle of the year begin? The year could begin at any of the '4' seasons, and would still produce an 'infinite' cycle. Apparently, each Greek city-state had its own calendar, and in different cities the year began at the beginning of each of the '4' seasons. The order in which the bones were counted is not clear. Because the gods that were of primary importance to each city were different, the different cities did not symbolize each of the '12' Olympians in their scheme of months.

For cultures that have a primary orientation to '4' dimensions, such as English, the year could begin at any of the '4' points of the year. The modern calendar was designed to begin at the winter solstice. (Figure 5.1-3) The calendar that the modern calendar replaced began at the spring equinox. (Figure 5.1-4) Chinese, however, does not orient time to the northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. Instead, Chinese orients to time as it orients to space, to the east, south, west, and north. The year in China begins with the beginning of spring. However, spring does not begin on a solstice or an equinox. Instead, the Chinese seasons begin at the midpoints between the solstices and equinoxes. The new year begins with the beginning of spring. Spring begins in the east, just as the day begins with the sunrise in the east. Therefore, the beginning of the year in China, the beginning of spring, is at the point of the east. (Figure 5.1-5) The new year in China begins at the first new moon after the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Figure 5.1-3 Figure 5.1-4

Figure 5.1-5

How were '4' weeks of '7' days counted on the hands? The days of the week were naturally associated with the gods. As the day is Yang, weekdays are Yang. Therefore, only those gods that were symbolized by one of the 'planets' in the sky were used, as these symbolize motion through space (motion through space is Yang). How did the Greeks name the '7' days of the week? There are '5' (Yang) male (Yang) 'planets', and '2' (Yin) female (Yin) 'planets'. The '2' (Yin) planets are the moon and Venus. The moon can be seen sometimes at night and sometimes in the day, and so is Yin. Venus can be seen sometimes at night, just behind the sun, and sometimes in the morning, just before the sun, and so is Yin. The sun and the other four planets can only be seen at night (the four planets) or only during the day (the sun), and only '1' time of sighting is Yang.

Each of the '4' fingers symbolizes '1' week. Each finger is subdivided into '2' groups of '3' days, with a '7'th day at the end. The distal (Yang) bone of the '1'st (Yang) group symbolizes the sun (Yang). The proximal (Yin) bone of the '1'st (Yang) group symbolizes the moon (Yin). The other '5' weekdays are symbolized by the '5' planets. The brightest of the planets is Jupiter, and therefore Jupiter is symbolized by the distal (Yang) bone of the '2'nd (Yin) group. The least bright of the planets is Mercury, and so Mercury is symbolized by the proximal (Yin) bone of the '2'nd (Yin) group. Of the remaining three planets, Venus is the brightest, and Mars is the least bright. As well, Venus and Mars form a natural pair. The woman (Yin), Venus, is symbolized by the middle bone of the '2'nd (Yin) group, and the man (Yang), Mars, is symbolized by the middle bone of the '1'st (Yang) group. (Figure 5.1-6)

Figure 5.1-6

The order of the weekdays begins with Yang, as day is Yang. The Yang bone of the Yang group symbolizes the sun. Following in the order heaven, earth, mankind, earth, heaven, mankind, the order for the weekdays is Sun-day, Moon-day, Mars-day, Mercury-day, Jupiter-day, and Venus-day. This is the order in use in all Romance languages, such as Spanish and French, and was the basis for the order of the weekdays in the Germanic languages, such as English and German.

The '7'th day of the week, as with the Jews before them and as with the Christians after them, was devoted to 'time' (Yang, infinity). The most distant planet, Chronos (Saturn), which takes the most 'time' to revolve around the earth, was considered by the Greeks to be the god of 'time'. It was also Chronos (time) who was considered to have fathered the major Olympians (time fathered space). The day of Saturn, Saturn-day, has come into English as 'Saturday'.

5.2 Roman Timekeeping

The Roman pantheon of gods was in many ways very similar to that of the Greek pantheon, as they both recognized the same four dimensional forms of time and gods.

The first Roman calendar contained ten lunar months. The Romans were aware of the cycle of the year, and had agriculture, but did not yet understand the year well. The Romans understood that the moon, the symbol of Yin, not only symbolizes woman (Yin) but the earth (Yin) as well. In the fifth dimension of awareness, the Romans had come to understand that woman follows a '10' (Yin) (lunar) month cycle of pregnancy. With their incomplete understanding of the year, they assumed that they cycle of the year was also ten months; that is, the cycle of pregnancy of the earth was ten months just as with woman, and every ten months the earth would bear fruit, just as would woman.

The ten lunar months were numbered from one to ten, and had no special names. In fact, the 'numbers' that named the months were created for this purpose of establishing and expressing awareness of the five dimensional cycle of perpetuation, of mankind (childbirth), of time (the year), etc.

The year started on the spring equinox, which is when the earth becomes ready to receive the seed of man and become pregnant, just as woman at that time was thought to be ready to receive the seed of man and become pregnant.

Not very long after this calendar was established, the Romans interacted with the Greeks, from whom they gained a better understanding of the seven day week and of the 12 month cycle of the year.

The Romans added two months to the front of their year, bringing the total number of months to 12. The Romans did not have a special symbolism for the '12' Olympians, and so did not use their names as a guide in naming the months. They therefore used the names of the '6' primary days of the week to name the first '6' months. The last six months retained their original numbers. For example 'December' is the '12'th month, but 'decem' in Latin means '10' (as in 'decimal', or base '10', system); 'November' is the '11'th month, but 'novem' in Latin means '9'; 'October' is the '10'th month, but 'octo' in Latin means '8' (as in 'octave', 'octet', etc.); and 'September' is the '9'th month, but 'septem' in Latin means '7'. The '7'th and '8'th months were similarly named, but later 'quintilis' ('quint' = '5') was renamed after Julius Caesar ('July'), and 'sextilis' ('sex' = '6') was renamed after 'Augustus Caesar' ('August').

The first six months have retained the system of odd numbered months having an odd number of days and even numbered months having an even number of days. When Augustus lengthened the month of August to 31 days to equal the length of July, he reversed the length of the last four months, such that September and November have 30 days and October and December have 31 days, in order to avoid having three months in a row of 31 days.

The first six months of the Roman year followed their naming system for the days of the week fairly well, but the Romans made some changes as they developed their new system, which was not based on the Greek system of the 12 Olympians.

The first month was therefore symbolized by the sun. The Romans named the month after the god Janus, and not after the sun itself, but Janus clearly symbolizes the sun (year). Janus was a two-faced god, who used one face to watch the old year leave and one face to watch the new year arrive. The beginning of the month of January was designed to coincide with the winter solstice, which was the 'birth of the sun', and so the birth of a new year. The sun reaches its shortest length of the year at the winter solstice, and then begins to increase in length each day after the solstice.

The Romans celebrated Saturnalia just before the winter solstice. Saturn was associated with Chronos, the Greek god of time, and gave birth to the new year in the same symbolic sense that the Greek god Chronos gave birth to the major Olympians, and in the sense that the seventh day of the Greek week, Chronos (Saturn), gave rise to a new cycle of the week, which began with Sun-day.

The second month was named 'Februarius', after the goddess of purification. This clearly symbolized the second day of the week, the moon. Why? Who needed to be purified? Yin. The moon symbolizes Yin. Woman is Yin, and the earth is Yin. Woman and the earth needed to be purified in February, before the spring equinox of March. How successful the purification ceremonies were would be seen in how much of the land subsequently became impregnated and bore fruit (crops), and how many women subsequently became impregnated and bore fruit (children).

The third month, March, is the month of Mars, which corresponds to the third day of the Greek week, Tuesday. Mars symbolized man. In March, when woman and the earth became fertile again in the new year, it was man who sowed seed in the fields, thereby impregnating the earth, just as it was man who sowed his seed in woman, thereby impregnating woman.

The order of the next three months does not follow the order of the weekdays exactly, as the Romans made cultural adaptations, but all of the same gods were symbolized.

The fourth month was named after Aphrodite (Venus). The name Aphrodite was borrowed in an altered form, 'Apru', now 'April' in English. Aphrodite was the goddess of childbirth. The fifth month was named after Hermes (Mercury). In order to express the importance of woman in childbirth, not Hermes himself, but 'Maia', his mother, who gave 'birth' to him, was used, and so the fifth month is named 'May'.

The sixth month was named after Zeus (Jupiter). Again, instead of using the name of Jupiter himself, the name of his wife, Juno (Hera), who gives 'birth' to his children was used, and so the sixth month is named 'June'.

5.3 Judaism

There are three main forms of religion in the western world, the world of cultures with languages that have a primary orientation to the fourth dimension. In each of these forms, earlier four dimensional pantheons of gods and goddesses evolved into a single five dimensional integrated god.

The oldest form is known as Judaism. According to tradition, a man named Moses introduced the Hebrew people to Judaism. According to tradition, when Moses was young he was adopted by the daughter of the Pharaoh of Egypt, and he was able to live at court and observe first hand the most sophisticated culture of the ancient Egyptians. At that time, Egypt had had a solar calendar for over one thousand years, and was well aware of and accustomed to the unit of time of the year. Hebrew society in Egypt as a whole must have been well exposed to the five dimensional culture of the year, but Moses experienced it at a higher level of society.

Egypt had, either within the life of Moses or shortly before, made a brief attempt to establish a five dimensional religion, wherein the entire pantheon of gods was integrated into one god, just as awareness of the year enabled integration of all of the givers (gods) of time in the sky. The experiment of Akhenaton, and his god Aton, failed upon his death, as the common people were not as aware of the fifth dimension and so were unready and unwilling to give up their gods, led by the powerful priests of the other gods.

Moses must have been introduced to this religion by a priest who knew of it, and he must have been evolved enough to realize the whole new dimension of consciousness that was expressed through this five dimensional integrated god religion, and to realize the obvious advantages of this religion over the current four dimensional religion of the Hebrews. Because of his five dimensional awareness learned in upper class Egypt, Moses perceptively recognized a more complete 'truth' of nature.

Moses taught the Hebrews about an integrated god, and the Hebrews, who were aware of the five dimensional cycle of the year, recognized that the new religion complemented their five dimensional understanding of the world, and so naturally abandoned their own four dimensional religion of subdivided gods.

Judaism as a religion evolved for over one thousand years before the birth of Jesus, and the Jews were by that time extremely developed and accustomed to their religion.

5.4 Christianity

Jesus was born a Jew in a province of the Roman empire. He was well aware of the five dimensional religion of his ancestors, and of the thousand years of evolution of this religion.

When Jesus preached his five dimensional religion, listeners must have perceptively (Yang) recognized its advantages over the four dimensional religions. The five dimensional religion of Judaism must have made wonderful sense (Yang) to people who were aware of the integrated nature of the fifth dimension but who still followed a four dimensional religion. It is quite plausible that one man could ignite a fire that changed the orientation of religion among four dimensional cultures, as more and more people were exposed to the five dimensional model of religion that he preached. Jesus was the first Jew whose message was carried to large numbers of non Jews.

Although Greece and the Roman empire progressed steadily toward recognition and acceptance of 'Christianity', there was a lot of resistance to the new movement. Many people, including many powerful people, still did not make such important use of the yearly cycle in their daily lives, and so were not aware enough of the fifth dimension that they could clearly and immediately recognize the truths that it symbolized, or they had vested interests in the old religion. Resistance by the powers that be in the Roman empire was greater against Christianity that against other religions, as Christianity did not just represent different gods, it represented a different relationship to nature. Acceptance was slow, and it took three hundred years before the emperor of Rome proclaimed it to be the state religion. This period of the rise of Christianity mirrors the evolution of society in Europe from a four dimensional awareness of time and space to a five dimensional awareness of time, as expressed through language.

The religion of Christianity grew up side by side with the science of geometry. Christianity symbolized society's evolving five dimensional understanding of time. Geometry symbolized society's four dimensional understanding of space. Science and religion became locked in a struggle that continues to this day. Each claims to be the 'one' that is 'right' and claims the other to be 'wrong'.

And yet, they are both right, and they are both wrong. Science, which is based on the four dimensional model of language, has been unable to express or explain the perceptive (Yang) truths of 'religion' (Yang), as they are too abstract (Yang), 'illogical (Yang), etc., and science (Yin) can only follow the concrete (Yin), logical (Yin), etc. model of geometry. Religion, based on the five dimensional model of nature, has been unable to express itself in language, and recognizes that the model of science is inadequate to express its truths. Because religion does not follow the model of language, religion has been unable to interpret fully the symbolism of the Bible, which is written using language. Therefore, religion has not been free to challenge interpretations because their symbolism is so abstract that people cannot be sure what to keep and what to challenge. Now, it has become possible for science and religion to merge, such that both can evolve together.

What light does this new five dimensional model of the world shed on the teachings of Christianity? A few topics will be explored here.

There was a creation. The universe as we now know it was created at the beginning of the third dimension of the universe. Time was the creator of the universe. Time is infinite. Time is immortal. Time created the space that mankind occupies in the universe. As most Indo-European languages symbolize time (Yang) with man (Yang), 'god' is symbolized as a 'he' in the form of 'man'.

As the Bible says, it was light that brought the universe into being. All primitive peoples must have been aware of the light of creation during their evolution, or else they would not have been able to become conscious at all. Therefore, creation myths and the importance of light must be common themes in all religious cosmologies, just as it is in the scientific cosmology known as the 'Big Bang'.

As Indo-European languages orient to the four dimensional area, they orient to an area that passes through the midline of their body, vertically, from which it rises upward toward the heavens and downward toward the earth. The area connects the heavens (Yang), where the infinite (Yang), immortal (Yang), gods, the givers of time (Yang), dwell in their '1' (Yang) place, to the earth where mankind lives. As mankind is Yin, he is mortal. As he is mortal, he must die. As mankind has '2' (Yin) states of existence, alive and dead, he was considered to have '2' (Yin) places to reside. While alive (Yang), he resided on earth. To discover where he lives in death, follow the area from the heavens through mankind to below the earth, the underworld. The ancient Greeks believed that mankind lived in the underworld (Yin) after death.

The Bible teaches that the world was created in '6' days. Why '6'? Why 'days'? It was with the creation of light that the '3'rd dimension of the universe, the present dimension of the universe, was created. It was in the '3'rd dimension of awareness that mankind became aware of his existence, and aware that he had been created. It was in the third dimension of awareness that mankind became aware of the cycle of time and space and light, which flows in the order time, space, light, space, time, light. This cycle of the '3'rd dimension, the cycle of '6', was symbolized using the '2' index fingers, each of which has '3' bones. The universe was created in the first complete cycle of interaction among time, space, and light, and so '6' was indeed the cycle of creation. Why 'days'? Because in the '3'rd dimension of awareness, the only unit of time of which mankind was aware was the cycle of light and darkness, the cycle of the day. Mankind at that time was aware of no other unit of time than the day.

Because of the '4' dimensional nature of Indo-European languages, the month came to be subdivided into '4' weeks. Each week was symbolized by one of the '4' fingers of the left hand. Each of the '3' bones of each finger has a Yang and a Yin position, enabling '6' positions of the thumb over a volume of space. The seventh day of the week, the last day, is counted using the thumb in a manner that is different from the other six days. The six days of the week symbolize the six days of creation. The seventh day of the week was recognized to be distinct and special. The Jews recognized that the seventh day should be set aside as different from the other six, and made it a day of rest. The word 'Sabbath' is related to the Hebrew word for 'seven'.

Some people consider Jesus to be the 'son' of god. It is certainly reasonable for people who genderize nature into a 'father' time and a 'mother' space to believe that Jesus is their 'son'. However, in such a belief system, all people and all that exists can be equally recognized to be the offspring (perpetuation) of time and space, and so be the 'children' of god and of nature.

The Bible has '5' books, which symbolize the '5' dimensions. There are '10' commandments, one for each of the '5' (Yang) fingers of each of the '2' (Yin) hands.

Just as religion is Yang to the Yin of science, religion itself is subdivided 'infinitely' into relationships of Yang and Yin. At one level of subdivision, it can be recognized that Judaism is the Yang to the Yin of Christianity. Later, Islam evolved, completing the cycle of '3' by being the Yang and the Yin within the Yin and the Yang.

Judaism evolved '1'st (Yang) to recognize one god, and Christianity evolved '2'nd (Yin). The society that evolved to Judaism accepted the new religion quickly (Yang), and the society that evolved to Christianity accepted the new religion slowly (Yin). Judaism evolved '1' (Yang) form of god, and Christianity evolved '2' (Yin), 'God' (Yang) and his 'son' (Yin); Jesus (Yin) was considered to be the offspring of God (Yang), just as space (Yin) is the offspring of time (Yang). Jews go '1' (Yang) place when they die. Christians can go to either of '2' (Yin) places when they die, Heaven (Yang) or Hell (Yin). ('Hel' was the name of the Norse goddess of the underworld.) Jews have '1' (Yang) testament, the 'old' (Yang, as '1'st), Christians have '2' (Yin) testaments, the 'old' (Yang) and the 'new' (Yin). The Jews are few (people are few '1'st (Yang)) and the Christians are many (few at '1'st (Yang) evolves into many '2'nd (Yin)). The holy day of the Jews is Saturday (Yang), and the holy day of Christians is Sunday (Yin), as Sunday is the '2'nd (Yin) day when Saturday is the '1'st (Yang) day.

5.5 Islam

Six hundred years after the time of Jesus, in a politically and culturally isolated and inhospitable region of the world, Saudi Arabia, the people had had 600 more years to become aware of the five dimensional nature of the world, but they still followed a four dimensional religion, and were very ready to recognize and accept a five dimensional religion. When a man by the name of Mohammed introduced the same Jewish model of a five dimensional integrated religion, it was accepted much more quickly than in the Roman empire.

Like the power of a hydrogen bomb, where tremendous energy (Yang) is released in a sudden (Yang) expansion (Yang) when atoms of hydrogen fuse (evolve, age, energy = time = Yang) into atoms of helium, the energy that was released by this sudden fusion of a society with a four dimensional religion into a society with a five dimensional religion caused the incredible explosion upon the world, the 'Big Bang', of the irresistible energy known as Islam.

In its first one hundred years of rapid (Yang) expansion (Yang), Islam destroyed the very powerful Persian empire, encroached heavily upon (and ultimately destroyed) the west's most powerful empire, the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire, conquered North Africa, and established a foothold in distant Spain that took almost 800 years to dislodge. The increased energy was also directed in the form of great creativity at the sciences, the arts, literature, etc.
